The United States Navy Observatory is one of the oldest scientific agencies in the United States. It was established in 1830 and by Federal Law made a Nation Observatory in 1842. Its primary use is to care for the United States Navy chronometers and navigational equipment. It is located on top of Observatory Hill overlooking Massachusetts Avenue. For ten years the names National Observatory and Navy Observatory were used when referring to the observatory until a ruling passed to only use the name Navy Observatory.
