The Arlington House overlooks the Potomac River across from the National Mall. During the American Civil War the land was chosen as the grounds for the Arlington National Cemetery. In 1925 The War Department started restorations on the Mansion and in 1933 control of the land was given to the National Park Service. Congress designated the mansion as a memorial to Robert E. Lee in 1955.
